DAY 1/ DEPARTURE
Depart
the US on your overnight flight to Spain.
Day 2/ MADRID
Arrive and transfer to your hotel. Balance of the day at leisure. In
the evening, a welcome drink orientation.
Day 3/ MADRID
Morning sightseeing tour of Madrid. Pass through Puerto del Sol Plaza,
Plaza España with its monument to Cervantes, the Casa de Campo,
the Moorish Quarter, and University City. Visit the palatial Prado
Museum. Afternoon at leisure.
Day 4/ MADRID / AVILA / SALAMANCA
Cross the rugged Sierra de Guadarrama to Segovia, famous for its
Alcazar and the 2000 year old Roman Aqueduct. Continue to the walled
and turreted city of Avila, where St. Theresa founded the order of the
Carmelites. Drive to Salamanca, for an orientation tour and visit the
Baroque Plaza Mayor.
Day 5/ SALAMANCA / FATIMA /
LISBON
Depart
for Portugal, via the Serra da Estrela mountain range. Drive through
Viseu to Fatima, site of the famous religious miracles, and visit the
Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary. Continue to Lisbon, capital of
Portugal.
Day 6/ LISBON
Morning
tour of Lisbon. View the Belem Tower and visit Jeronimos Monastery with
the Tomb of Vasco da Gama. Walk through the cobbled alleys of Alfama,
the seaman¹s quarter. Afternoon at leisure or an optional tour to
Sintra ($39).
Day 7/ LISBON / ELVAS / SEVILLE
Drive
to Elvas, and view the 16th century aqueduct. Cross the border to Spain
near the citadel of Badajoz, and continue through Andalusia to Seville.
Day 8/ SEVILLE
This
morning, tour Seville. Drive to the Plaza de España,
pass Maria Luisa Park, and stroll the narrow streets and picturesque
plazas of the Santa Cruz Quarter. View the Moorish architecture of the
Giralda Tower and visit the Cathedral, the world's largest Gothic
monument. Depart for Córdoba, founded by the Romans. View the
Mezquita, a former Moorish Mosque and today Córdoba's main
Cathedral. Visit the Jewish Quarter and view the medieval synagogue
before returning to
Seville. This evening, enjoy an optional flamenco show ($30).
Day 9/ SEVILLE / ALGECIRAS / TETOUAN / TANGIER
Drive through the sherry wine region of Jerez to Algeciras.
Cross the Strait of Gibraltar to Ceuta. Continue to Tetouan, former
capital of Spanish Morocco and visit the medina. Drive through the
northern foothills
of the Rif to Tangier, home of the legendary medieval traveler Ibn
Batuta.
Day 10/ TANGIER / COSTA DEL SOL
Morning
tour of Tangier, including the colorful Grand Socco market. View the
Casbah and the Sultan¹s palace. Cross the Strait of Gibraltar,
returning
to Spain. Drive along the Spanish coast to your hotel.
Day 11/ COSTA DEL SOL
Full
day at leisure.
Day 12/ COSTA DEL SOL / GRANADA
Depart
for Granada. Visit the famous Alhambra founded in the 13th-century and
originally comprised of houses, schools, baths, barracks, and gardens
surrounded by seemingly impenetrable walls. View the Old Quarter, and
stroll through the Water Gardens of the Generalife, the royal summer
residence.
Day 13/ GRANADA / TOLEDO / MADRID
Drive
north through the region of La Mancha, legendary home of Don Quixote. A
stop in Consuegra provides a panoramic view of its famous windmill.
Continue to Toledo, once the spiritual and intellectual center of
Spain. Visit the Cathedral, the Church of Santo Rome, and the Synagogue
of Santa
Maria La Blanca. Continue to Madrid.
DAY 14/ MADRID / BARCELONA
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Barcelona. Arrive
and transfer to your hotel. Balance of the day at leisure.
DAY 15/ BARCELONA
This
morning, tour Barcelona, including a panoramic tour of the Harbour
area,
Montjuic, Plaza de España and Plaza de Catalunya. Enjoy a walk
through the Gothic Quarter and visit the Cathedral. Afternoon at
leisure.
DAY 16/ BARCELONA
